Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki Tour Overview

The Northeast is a vast and diverse region, and fitting everything into a 5-day itinerary is impossible. To create a meaningful and enjoyable trip, it's best to focus on one or two states that are geographically close to each other. Here are five detailed 5-day itineraries for different parts of the Northeast, each with a specific theme and focus.

Meghalaya is a land of rolling hills, stunning waterfalls, and unique living root bridges. This itinerary focuses on the most popular destinations: Shillong, Cherrapunji, and the cleanest village in Asia.

Base: Shillong (for the first night) and Cherrapunji (for the next two nights).

Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Shillong & City Sights

Arrive at Guwahati Airport (GAU) and transfer to Shillong (approx. 3-4 hours). On the way, stop at Umiam Lake, a massive man-made lake with beautiful surroundings.

Check in to your hotel in Shillong.

In the evening, explore Police Bazaar (the local market) and Ward's Lake, a picturesque lake with a wooden bridge and boating facilities.

Day 2

Cherrapunji's Waterfalls and Caves

After breakfast, drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra), known as one of the wettest places on Earth.

En route, visit Elephant Falls, a stunning three-tiered waterfall, and Shillong Peak for a panoramic view of the city.

In Cherrapunji, visit the mesmerizing Nohkalikai Falls (the tallest plunge waterfall in India), the beautiful Seven Sisters Falls, and the fascinating Mawsmai Caves (limestone caves with a maze of passages).

Check into your hotel in Cherrapunji for the night.

Day 3

Trekking to the Living Root Bridge

This day is for adventure. Drive to Tyrna village and embark on a trek to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village. This is a challenging but rewarding hike with thousands of steps.

The trek takes around 5-6 hours round-trip, so start early.

After the trek, return to your hotel in Cherrapunji for a well-deserved rest.

Day 4

Asia's Cleanest Village & Dawki

Check out from your hotel and drive to Mawlynnong, famously known as "Asia's Cleanest Village."

Explore the charming village, its Sky View bamboo bridge offering a glimpse of the plains of Bangladesh, and a single-decker living root bridge.

Drive to Dawki to witness the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River. You can go boating here for a surreal experience.

In the evening, transfer back to Shillong for your last night.

Day 5

Departure

After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you can do some last-minute souvenir shopping or visit a few more spots in Shillong.

Transfer back to Guwahati Airport for your onward journey.
